He looked up at the Lone Tree from its roots, at its withering leaves. He circled the tree, looking at the claw marks that cross-hatched its ancient bark. He felt sorry for the battle-worn tree. In many ways, he felt that the tree resembled his current position in life. He felt that they had some sort of mutual understanding, an understanding that he thrived on. For reasons even he didn't know, he loved this tree.
Careful to not scratch the roots or scratch himself on the gravel that surrounded the tree, he curled up in cradling grasp of the tree's roots. His mind flashed back to his mother, when he had slept in the curve of her stomach like this, but those days seemed long gone. His mother was dead, but this tree was here.
He was glad this tree was here.

She had her own batch of mistakes and horrors in her past, bringing her silent and focused in the short life that she had. Her petite dark brown paws padded against the ground silently. Her big round green eyes peered at the large tree ahead, the lion cub that had curled himself into one of the roots unseen by the large keen eyes. The tree itself was a testament to time and the will to survive. Despite many of the scars that littered the side of the bark the tree stood tall and bold against the lands that were wasted around her. She hoped lightly onto one of the large roots, just enjoying the feel of power that rippled through her muscles as she stealithly moved around the tree.
Finally she came to a curve in the trees roots to which she slid down, only at the bottom that she spotted another feline. Instantly the fur around her neck stood up and her eyes narrowed. Her already unsheathed claws dug into the ground and she resisted the urge to let out a growl. She didn't speak though, just stared with an accusing look that left only one question. Who are you?

In the tree's embrace, he was in some sort of bliss. Nothing existed around him except for the roots that surrounded him. This tree was the mother he never had but had always wanted. Suddenly, his dream-like state was ripped away when a scent drifted on the light wind.
When the scent reached his nose, his ears perked and his head shot up. He lifted his nose and tracked the scent. It was very close. His hackles rose and his whiskers clung to his cheeks.
"Who's there?" He hissed. His sky blue eyes scanned the horizon which he as facing, but didn't glance at the tree behind him. His tail lashed back and forth, the dark brown tuft swishing through the air.
Show yourself.
