quick description - Large dark male with kind eyes, looks older
full description - Niaru has a muscular physique, and can appear quite intimidating. He’s large in stature (tall) and you can see his muscles ripple under his coat. His fur is a deep red, and his thick mane is dark gray, looking almost black, with lighter gray highlights. The gray of his mane matches the gray of his stomach, as well as the tufts of fur he has on his elbows. His paws are the same color as his highlights, and match his muzzle and eye patches as well. Though intimidating from afar, Niaru’s features are surprisingly gentle, with soft turquoise eyes and the front of his mane falling like bangs over his eyes. His tail is long and ends with a thick tail tuft. His paws are very large and, contrary to his personality, he usually has all of his claws out, a distinct clue to his lineage for anyone that cares to take notice.
personality - Niaru, having travelled and experienced much in his short life, is wiser than he looks. He is the lion to go to when one is seeking advice, or just companionship. He's a kind soul, which is surprising considering he spent his formative years under dear old "auntie" Zira, with Nuka as his best mate. Niaru's temper is long-for he has a lot of patience-and it takes a lot to get him angry. Even though he's known for keeping his cool, when he does anger he is a force to be reckoned with, for he is a fierce and very skilled fighter. Niaru rarely jumps to conclusions, and tends to think things through and consider all aspects of a problem before trying to solve it. He believes in strong relationships, with friends, family, and pride, and he is a lion who would go to the ends of the earth for his loved ones. But, he won't hesitate to do what he knows is right, even if it means going against what his loved ones say. His calm composure, intelligence, and fighting prowess make him an asset to any pride who would take him.
history - Niaru was born as an Outlander, to one of Zira’s comrades, a year before Kovu hit the scene. He grew up as a close friend to Nuka, even though the two were complete opposites. Niaru was kind and understanding, while Nuka did everything in his power to please his mother. Often times Zira would pit all the cubs against each other for "training"; Niaru came out on top most of the time, and gained Zira's approval over and over, eventually gaining the title of "nephew" (though they weren't related). Niaru recognized that their training was causing all his childhood friends pain, including Nuka, and he didn't like it. Nuka, however, didn't seem to mind; he was always trying desparately for Zira's approval, which often passed to Niaru and Kovu. Nuka's obsession soon drove the two friends apart; as they grew older and-at least in Niaru’s case-wiser, Niaru began to realize that Zira’s way of ruling the Outlands was cruel and wrong, and would be the demise of their pride. So when he was two, Niaru took off, leaving his homeland behind. He travelled all over the savannah as a rogue male searching for a place to call home. He came upon the Lowlands, asked for acceptance, and was taken in by the old king. Now-a-days, Niaru still resides in the Lowlands, though their feud with the Highlanders is eerily reminiscent of the war between the Pridelanders and Outlanders. He hopes that one day he can show them that there is another solution to their problems besides fighting.
